Houndstooth Dress And A Black Beret

Here is the outfit that I wore the other day. You cannot really see it in the picture (as it is a really bad one) but it has a tiny houndstooth print. I bought this dress years ago when I was first beginning to buy vintage and sixties styled clothing. Its label is Revival and it was sold through Dangerfield. Though it may not look it so much, this dress is actually two sizes bigger than what I usually wear. I haven't worn it for a few years because I always felt it was too big. But for some reason upon trying it on the other day it just seemed to work. I was thrilled, for I really missed wearing it. Perhaps it was all those chocolates I had over Christmas, ha!

Recently I've also been having a little dilemma with accessorizing. I used to be nuts about it, wearing vintage beaded necklaces, bangles, rings, earrings, brooches. But I feel like it just hasn't been working for me lately. I barely even wear rings anymore, coming from someone who used to wear them on almost every finger. I wonder what happened. Things just sort of feel empty with my outfits now. Aside from that, I've been trying to re-initiate my old hype for it, giving headbands and hats a test-run here and there. How do you think it worked with this outfit? I think it looks very Cynthia Lennon. Though I suppose it is not the most appropriate for a steaming-hot-Australian-Summer, is it? I ended up having to take it off because my head got way too hot.

Oh well, enough of my ramblings about clothes. Here are the little knick knacks that I picked up over that week.

Two vintage glasses and a vintage Avon "Pony Decanter - Wild Country After Shave Lotion" Bottle.  I simply love glassware in this gorgeous amber colour. Whenever I walk into a second hand store or antique store my eyes are always drawn to it almost immediately. Perhaps it is less popular because I never really see any other colours about. I also love any vintage glassware that is green. Beautiful. Do you have a favourite?

  1. I remember that horse's head bottle in the Avon catalogue when I was a little girl!
Fab dress, some red accessories would look wonderfully mod! x

    1. Wow, that's pretty neat! Thanks for the advice, I know of got some red bangles and earrings tucked away somewhere in a jewellery box. I should pull it out on of these days.

  2. Hi, dear Lucy In The Sky! I say you look lovely in your dress and beret, although I can imagine you getting "hot headed" from the black absorbing the heat of the summer sun. I was fascinated reading about your accessorizing dilemma. Having closely observed the habits of females for 60 years, I can tell you that fashion "phases" are common and cyclical. You might develop a passion for a certain way of presenting yourself. That phase might run its course and you wake up one day and decide to seek a new direction. Eventually you might find that you miss the fun and variety afforded by accessorizing and get back into it again. It's your life and your style. Please yourself. Go with your whims wherever they take you.

The river can't be forced. Let it flow.

My aunt and uncle operated a thrift shop chock full of vintage glassware like the pieces you acquired. When I was a boy I loved to stroll up and down the aisles admiring the colored glass. Green is my favorite color and they had loads of it. My parents purchased many of their items over the years and displayed them in our home.

Good night, dear friend Lucy, and have a fabulous Thursday!

    1. Thank you Shady. Yes, I eventually had to take it off it was so hot over here.
I think that that is a very good piece of advice. I shouldn't worry over it so much, eventually I will get back into the swing of things again. Personal style should always be expected to sway here and there within our lives and it should be welcomed.

The glass sections in antique stores are always one of my favourites to look at. I just love how the light shines through and if you look through them the world is in a different hue. Green vintage glass is just beautiful. Brilliant that you got to have such lovely things in your home to look at all the time. I hope they were displayed somewhere in which the light could shine up them. My family home has always had a vintage glass collection, but it is placed in a bar where it is quite dark so their magnificent colours can't be seen very well.

      Enjoy your weekend Shady!

  3. Lovely dress Lucy. I totally get where you are coming from when it comes to accessories, I don't wear half as much jewellery as I used to x

    1. Thank you Sarah. It's nice that I am not alone in the matter. Isn't it strange how our style changes over time, things coming and going in waves?

    1. Thank you Abigail. I'm glad that you like the hat! I'm sure eventually it will come to you, though I think the outfits you've shown on your blog are just lovely the way they are!

  5. Oh my! Love this dress!

Accessories are tricky sometimes. I'm all for hats and headbands. This dress seems to be accessorizing itself with the sweet collar.

That is a very nice point, now that I look at it, I think you are right! I don't think you can go wrong with collars.

  6. oh this is such a sweet dress! I have a few Dangerfield dresses. their pretty close to the mark in the reproduction sense. And i was going to say you look like Cynthia! but of course you noticed too!
i dont think it really think this dress needs any accessories though. Its more of a mod look so you wouldn't want too much going on. I used to wear every kind of jewelry, including anklets and toe rings, but i stopped all that when i tried to go hard core mod! I've only gotten back into chunky rings and bangles and necklaces in the last 2 years, though i end up taking them off at work because its very hard to type and use a mouse with them clanging all over the place!

Avon scent bottles are always amazing! i have two very cute little milk glass bottles with little kind of Scandinavian bird pattern on the side

    1. Thank you Catherine! Yes, I love Dangerfield dresses for that reason. I've been waiting for more 60's influenced dresses to come back into their range within the stores that sell it where I live. They seemed to have phased out a little bit over the past couple of years. Fingers crossed they bring more back.
I'm glad that you think the outfit looks quite Cynthia too! She is one of my biggest style icons from the 60's. Yes, when I did wear all those big accessories I'd always end up taking the rings off and keeping them in my purse throughout the day. They can get in the way sometimes!
And your Avon milk glass bottles sound very lovely. .

  7. You look terrific! I personally feel shift dresses can afford to be worn a little loose as they're somewhat shapeless to begin with. Certainly better too big than too small!
I like the beret a lot! I understand your feelings about accessorising, I've actually had similar thoughts myself. With it being winter over here piling up on the accessories feels a little pointless when it's only going to get caught up in your scarf or the wind will catch your hat (I actually ended up chasing my wide brim hat across a car park last winter, never again!). Lately I feel I can't wait for some warmer weather to inspire me to begin dressing up again. I think simplistic outfits can look really lovely though, and often when I look back at my favourite photos of 60s ladies their simpler outfits are often my favourites. If it's any consolation, I've never felt your outfits you post look bare :)

    1. Why thank you Faye! I agree - too big is better than too small when it comes to shift dresses! I am glad that you like it. Yes, sometimes it can be inconvenient to wear them. Sometimes the clasps on vintage necklaces would get caught in my hair or my rings would catch on things when looking through my purse. They look great but they can get in the way sometimes. Isn't it awful when our hats run away from us? I hope the warmer weather comes to you soon! And thank you very much, that was a very lovely thing to say!

  9. Ah, you look great! That hat is absolutely adorable, too! You look like you're straight out of a vintage film!!! I really want to start wearing hats but I feel like I can't pull them off.
It's weird how fashion and personal style happens in seasons. One day it's all accessories and the next it's nothing! I've been feeling the same way about all the '90s style floral I've been wearing lately- I think it's time for a change. Know you aren't alone!

You should definitely give them a go - I think you would rock the look. Yes, it is strange isn't it? I'm glad that I am not alone!

    1. Thank you! It is nice when things and outfits work out nicely just as they are, nice and simple without many accessories. I think that is something that I need to work on. Perhaps I should try more patterned items of clothing and such.
