There She Goes Again - Cynthia Lennon

Here we are again lovely lads and ladies. Another "There She Goes Again" post. This time around the spotlight is on one of my top favourite style icons from the 1960's, Cynthia Lennon, and her trusty black leather bag. Sleek, stylish and with two different lengthed straps for both convenience and versatility, Cynthia used this lovely little bag quite a lot during 1964. I am almost certain too that she can be seen with it in various photographs up to 1967, and it's no wonder. It matched so wonderfully with her outfits.

Many female readers out there may know the annoyance that it can be to constantly have to switch the contents of your bag to another when wanting to match an outfit nicely. I myself also find it a particular nuisance when I can't fit my purse into a different bag properly. Thus I'm sure that many would agree that having that 'perfect' bag like Cynthia just makes everything so much easier, saving a lot of time and fuss.

For a modern day go-to equivalent of Cynthia's bag I would have to say that the Effie Satchel in Black Spongy Pebbled by Mulberry is the most similar. You can buy it here. You'd have to be pretty keen though. It costs a whopping $1, 100. Has anyone else seen a more affordable modern day equivalent?

  1. Wow! That is one expensive bag. Really like the design, though, and - like Cynthia - my personal preference is one nice versatile bag vs. many different cheaper bags. (Although my "nice" price bracket is <$80 :-D).

You really have a good eye! As much as I love b&w photography, I still don't think I'd ever notice the details you do.

    1. I know! I am still on the lookout for my ideal bag. I have many beautiful vintage ones, but I would like a standard new one that I can use every other day to prevent further wear and tear to them. I think that is a much more agreeable price bracket than what Mulberry is selling their bag for!
And thank you very much, that is a lovely compliment!

  2. Yeah, that is expensive, though i might have seen something a bit like that at a thrift store!
since i don't do a lot of specific shopping on line, i might find random things at thrift stores that remind me of vintage pieces.
its a really nice bag, though. it looks like its just that perfect size! i enjoyed all the old photographs, too. Gotta love that Cynthia, so cute!

    1. I am the same. I very rarely shop online, and if I do it's usually for other people. I do most of my shopping at charity stores and I will often buy a vintage pair of shoes or bag because it reminds me of something that one of my style icons wore in the 1960's. Glad to know others do so too!
And I agree, it is very nice. I'm glad you enjoyed the post!

  3. I can't tell you of a cheaper alternative I'm afraid - it really looks gorgeous though!

  5. Great pictures Lucy! I can see why Cynthia carried that bag around all the time - it's gorgeous!

That Mulberry bag is lovely and whilst pricey, from experience I know that the bags are very well made. I do have a slight designer handbag problem though so I am a bit biased ;) Orla Kiely often have bags in that style so it's worth keeping a look out, they're a lot more affordable than Mulberry too.

  6. Cynthia is my favourite Beatle girl and I've always admired her style, she's very overlooked for her fashion sense I think. I've seen Mulberry bags in the flesh and they are very lovely, but I still can't imagine ever spending that on a bag, £40 is about my limit and even that feels a little much!

    1. I agree. I think Cynthia had a fantastic sense of style and I find it quite sad that some will not seem to notice. She deserves a lot more credit I feel. The bags sound like the are quite lovely! It would be very nice to have such a well-made bag. But in all honesty I don't know if I'll ever get to the point where they would be in my price range!

  7. Wow she had great style, just like you! :) I also need to find the perfect black bag that goes with everything (and that is big enough to fit everything..)...not an easy task right?!

    1. Why thank you! And I am completely with you. You'd think that it would be easy seeing as there are so many different styles, and especially when black is perhaps the most popular colour. But you can never just see to find the right one.

  8. ahh good spotting! and i love your images too! I wonder if perhaps she just never wanted buy another bag? i do tend to use the same bag every day because i tend to fall in love with it for a period of time and then spot another i like a few years later.
Sarah already mentioned the Orla Keily bag with the clasp on the top, but i kinda tricky to get her things shipped here.

    1. Thank you! I thought so too. I am similar in the way that most days I will use the same bag, but despite this I can't help buy continue to buy a cute vintage bag every time I see one! I've had to section of an entire shelf for them because they no longer fit in my closet - oh dear.
It does seem like her products are difficult to ship over her, and how unfortunate it is!
