Flowers

Here is the record I was talking about in this post. "Flowers" by The Rolling Stones, an American compilation album that was released in 1967. I've had my eye out for this LP for a while. But it was my mother that found it. She rang me up one day not long ago whilst she was up the coast and said she had stumbled upon a record fair with some brilliant stuff. She brought this one home for me for only $10.00!

The record isn't in the best condition, and nor is the cover. But I don't mind, things like that don't bother me very much. I think it is so groovy that I want to have it out on display in my room but me being me I've already covered pretty much every space on the wall. What also made me happy was that when I flipped the cover over I found that someone had written "Brian". And me being the Brian Jones fan I am, I like to think that someone wrote it there not because they were claiming the record as theirs but because they were a Brian fan too.

I must say though, that this cover always makes me just a little sad. If you are a Rolling Stones lover you may know that Bill Wyman claimed that when the cover was designed Mick Jagger and Keith Richards deliberately removed the leaves from the stem underneath Brian's face. Whether this was a subtle attack on him or just a little prank, it reminds me of the difficulties that were being faced between Brian and the other Stones at the time.

  1. Great album! As you know, i'm a Brian fan too! I love the design of this album, i'd want to put it on the wall too! My other half is a record dealer/collector and he brings back so many great albums but he sells the best condition ones, most of mine are pretty scruffy but at least it shows they get played I guess! I love the fact that people used to write their names on their LP's......makes me feel a little more connected to the past and the era I love so much! Lovely blog post! x

    1. How brilliant that your other half is a record dealer/collector. You both must see so many incredible records come in and out of the household. As long as they still play they are good in my eyes! A loved record is a good record. I do too, and feel the same way - more connected to a past era. And thank you!

  2. Seems like a great album. Unfortunately I haven't heard it but I think I'll dedicate it a little time. I'm already attracted to design of this album and that's motive enough not to mention old good Rolling Stones.

  3. It sure is some lovely artwork, I'd be tempted to put it on the wall also! Some of my records aren't in too fab condition either, but for me records are to be played so it doesn't really matter! I couldn't imagine owning something just to leave it on the shelf, as long as it plays it's fine. I love it when there's names and little traces of the original owner. My Magical Mystery Tour EP has hearts drawn around all of the pictures of Paul which I always get a kick out of.

    1. Nice to know I'm not the only one who'd want it on display. Precisely, records are to be played. I can understand where some collectors come from when they refuse to play something that is in mint condition, but in a way I think it defeats the purpose. How fantastic about your Magical Mystery Tour EP, I'd get a kick out of that too! On all my mother's Beatles LP's from her days as a little girl she'd write George above his picture on the some of the covers, as he was her favourite. It makes it all the more sentimental and is also quite amusing.

  6. i never knew that about this album cover! How haunting that they might have done something so cheeky but at the same time, perhaps they were just trying to be creative? I think we may have discussed this before, but if you haven't seen 'Stoned' you really should. its very much on Brians side of the story which is nice

    1. I think it a little haunting too. But you never know, perhaps they were just trying to be creative as you say. It does make for good composition. Yes, we have! It's quite funny, I only picked up the film at the video shop the other day and thought about watching it. Perhaps I am finally gaining up the courage!
