Watching the Skirt

'Granny' skirts are something that I wear a lot of. I can't resist a high-waisted skirt that goes down to my knees with zip and button at the back and is made out of that awful thick, fuzzy material that itches when the weather is too hot. They are just my cup of tea. Here I am wearing one of the latest ones I picked up as mentioned here. It is bright orange with a purple criss-cross pattern - what a skirt! I wore it with a pale pink peter pan collared blouse, vintage bag and my beloved vintage Ferragamo shoes, which meant I was constantly looking down at my feet to admire them all day. Does anyone else do that when they wear that one perfect pair of shoes?

Quite contrary to what some may think, wearing 'granny' skirts actually makes me feel quite youthful. Whenever I wear them I feel like I should have my arms wrapped around a pile of text books, walking through long locker lined corridors with the sound of a bell chiming in the distance. I can't help but feel like a 1960's school girl about to leave for the bus ride home. Think Lucy from "Across the Universe" (if you've seen it) here. It's such a cute little scene I think. Though the high school I attended had a strict uniform code, I always imagined that this is how I would have dressed if we had had a choice, granny skirts and all.

    1. Oh thank you very much! I found the Ferragamos down in Bathurst, Australia. They were only $4.00 in a little charity shop and were bought and smuggled home in a jam-packed carry-on luggage bag!

  4. Such a lovely look! That style of skirt is very common to pick up in our charity shops, but I do particularly like the colour of yours. The ones I've seen are usually rather dull! And I completely agree regarding the shoes, I have a bit of a 'thing' for shoes and just love to feel like I'm wearing the right pair. I do love the colour of yours, I don't think I've seen them in tan brown before.

    1. Thank you! It is quite a different colour isn't it? That's why I was so drawn to it amongst the other dull coloured 'granny skirts'. And thanks, I'm very happy with these puppies! Glad to know I'm not the only one who loves looking at their own shoes!

  5. That is a very cute outfit! I just recently came across my first granny skirt in a thrift store and I am excited to wear it. Those shoes are fantastic and I definitely do the same thing when wearing a lovely pair of shoes.

    1. Thanks, Sarah! Would love to see the outfit in a post perhaps when you do, and how can we blame ourselves when we've got the perfect pair on?

    1. Thank you, I'm glad you like it! And thanks so much about my blog layout. For a while now I wasn't happy with my old colour scheme, but I am much more happier with what I have going on now. Also, peter pan collars are always a tick in the box!

  7. I've never heard them called "granny skirts", but what a perfect term! They give off such a great library student/ Nancy Drew vibe. Also, I'm crazy about your Ferragamos! I see them every once in a while at thrift stores in surprisingly good condition for cheap, but never in my size. One day!

    1. Haha thank you! I've been calling them that for years. And yes, I love the Nancy Drew vibes they give off too. Funnily enough my sister always said I dressed like her. And thanks! I hope you find your dream pair in your size (though know I had to stuff mine with socks - they are a size too big for me - yes I'm mad, but I just couldn't give them up!)

  10. Is it strange that, immediately after I read the title, I had a pretty good guess as to where you got it from? I guess that's what being a Beatlemaniac does to you! :)

I really love this look you put together! I definitely need to invest in a granny skirt soon. It's funny, though — I had to wear a uniform for about ten years in primary school, but even after that, I find the (1960s) school girl look to be very prominent in my choice of attire: collared blouses, pinafores, knee highs, mary janes, etc.

    1. Oh really! I was worried it was way too loosely linked for anyone to pick up on it haha! I'm glad a fellow Beatlemaniac was able to pick up on it!
Thanks very much! All those things you mentioned, I hardly blame you - they are all such perfect things to have in a wardrobe.

  11. Pink and orange! the best colour combination! I love your fuzzy little friend. I used to buy all sorts of granny skirts and i once had a really pretty lavender one with knife pleats. super granny-like but i didnt mind. I also really like when i find the good wool Fletcher-Jones ones at the opp shops. the quality is so good and they are nice to wear with tights and a blouse

    1. It is such a good combination, isn't it? And the brighter the better! The lavender granny skirt sounds gorgeous, especially the knife pleats. I always keep my eye out for those in granny skirts but I've never been lucky enough. And yes, they are lovely, the quality does make a difference!

  14. Yes to everything! I kind of got into a school-girl vibe the past few months too, and I think I agree with your description-it makes you feel as though you can imagine the experiences of those that lived during that time. My daydreams usually involve carrying books as well, funny!
High waisted granny skirts are my all time favorite. This one is so unique and looks incredible on you! Also, I am jealous of your Ferragamo find. I found two pairs at a thrift store once, and they were both too small :( that is the only time I have come across them but I want some so desperately!

    1. How funny, indeed! Isn't it amazing how some clothing has the power to spark our imaginations so much?
Thank you very much. Oh that must have been in awful discovering that they were not in your size, I hope you find the perfect fitting pair one day! They are so beautiful a shoe!
