Skittles Legs At Last

The other day was so chilly it called for tights, at last! Out of my skittles-rainbow collection I opted for mustard coloured tights to go with this dress of mine. Perhaps I should have picked something a little more flamboyant though as a few people at University said that the colour of my legs had 'tripped' them out momentarily until they realized that I was actually wearing tights! I am also wearing a 'new' vintage bag that I bought whilst down in Bathurst (something else I had to somehow stuff inside carry-on luggage for the plane trip home along with all these).

Because my studies have recommenced, unfortunately I haven't had many opportunities to go out hunting for vintage treasures. I did though the other day spend the afternoon having a snoop in some of the local antique stores and charity shops. I found this black vintage bag for $5.00. Call me a complete cheapskate, but I will always try and refrain from buying a vintage bag unless it is below this price. I do have reason for it though. I have a lot of vintage bags, and plenty more than I've ever shared on this blog. For me, sticking to such a strict limit prevents me from bringing home hoards and hoards of vintage bags and purses, and makes the buying process a lot more selective. It also helps me stick to a controlled budget, especially since vintage handbags are quite prevalent in my local area.

You most probably cannot see it but the bag pictured has beautiful woven detailing upon it. The handle is very soft and very comfortable, yet sturdy, and as I tend to carry my handbags at my elbow this ticks all the boxes for me! I also purchased this beautiful vintage suede coat that reminds of something that Brian Jones would have worn for only $5.00 as well, and two 45's. David Bowie's "Drive In Saturday" single and an EP by The Who. You can see more of my record collection here.

Do you set yourself any 'rules' while out hunting for vintage?

  1. i just love your mod tights!
i have to say that setting certain limits when shopping is normal for me and probably healthy. otherwise i'd just be buying up all the vintage stuff in sight just because it's vintage and i need to rescue it.

    1. Thank you, Abigail! I'm glad that you think setting limits is healthy. I think I'd be doing the exact same if I didn't have my limits in place!

  2. That suede jacket is an absolute beauty! Yellow tights seem to get such an odd reaction, I wore mine to the Post Office three years ago and the lady behind the counter still mentions them! x

    1. I'm glad that you like it, Vix! I was a bit uncertain about buying it because it is a little too big for me, but I just had to have it. Oh dear! It's funny isn't it, though I must say the odd reactions occur even more when I wear my green tights. I've gotten "Frog's legs!" from a complete stranger!

  3. I love the colour combo! Navy and mustard is a favourite of mine to wear, especially in winter! And that bolero you got is magnificent! And for so cheap. What luck! My rules for vintage have changed recently. I can't buy anymore house things like ceramics or trinkets because I have too many! Though if I find something from a really good pottery company I'll buy it anyway! As for clothes, i just like for them to be reasonably cheap and fit me. I don't like having to do too many modifications or repair jobs to vintage clothes. Because I am both lazy and don't want to wreck the original look.

    1. Thanks, Catherine! I've never really tried the two colours together, but now I'm in love with it. Glad you like the bolero. That sounds like a good rule to me. I think we all need another home just to store out 'extra' vintage in! And I understand about buying clothes that fit you. I've got vintage dresses I bought nearly ten years ago that I don't think will ever fit me!

  4. Oh, love this outfit! Navy and mustard are such happy colors. Definitely too warm for tights here right now, unfortunately!

I don't have a specific price limit, but now that I think of it, I've never bought a second-hand or vintage bag that was over $5.00 - so maybe I'll go ahead and officially adopt your rule! :-)

    1. I'm glad you do, thanks Anna! Funny isn't it, I actually think that's how I came up for the rule myself in the first place!

  5. Great outfit! The yellow adds a nice, bright touch.
I'm not sure if there are any rules that I set for myself, I just tend to remind myself that it's important to be prudent about things and not buy something just because I kind of like it.
You got some pretty stuff. The bag is cute and I love the coat!

    1. Thank you! That is a very good thing to think of when vintage hunting. It's always a lot better if the item has some sort of use or function to it, rather than just buying it to have hidden in the back of your wardrobe.

  7. You know lately I've been admiring mod dresses more and more, I have a few on my wishlist right now that I am thinking of getting to wear in summer - I am too much of a wuss to wear a short dress with how chilly it's been atm. Do you know the show, Love Child? It's really got me wanting to be a bit more adventurous with my style and try out a new era!

    1. It's always great to be adventurous with style and try new things. What I find comforting is that I can always go back to wearing what I know and feel right in. I'd love to see some of the mod dresses on your wishlist! Yes, I know of Love Child but unfortunately have been unable to follow it! Perhaps I'll have to try YouTubing episodes.

  8. I love mustard tights, they really are so versatile and go with almost anything. Although I always get people doing a double take when I wear them too, it probably doesn't help that I'm olive skinned and so a little yellow naturally!
I really do love that jacket, I can't wait to see how you'll wear it! Luckily I'm not much of a handbag person, but shoes are my weakness! I definitely have to put rules on it for myself or it would get silly! I won't allow myself to spend more than £15 for a pair of vintage shoes unless they're something incredibly special. I tend to put rules on my clothing spends too or I'd just end up bringing home all the vintage!

    1. They are versatile aren't they? And I'm the exact same - though it probably doesn't look like it in my pictures I am actually olive skinned as well, so I was a little bit worried trying out the mustard legs at first for that reason! I'm hoping to wear the jacket with one of the vintage embroidered blouses I got down south. Only problem is, though winter is nearly over, it is still not cold enough!
I wish the vintage shoes would flock to my area. Oh imagine a world where we could just bring it all home and not have to worry about money or space!

  9. You look lovely, I love navy and mustard together :) it's strange to think you're having weather cold enough for tights and it's so warm here at the moment that wearing shorts is too hot! I think it's great that you have that limit on spending, at those prices I'd be taking the whole shop home! I try to restrict myself when I go out shopping in charity shops and car boot sales, because they only take cash and not card, whatever money I take limits how much I spend. xxx

    1. Thank you very much, Hannah! It is strange isn't it? Stranger still that on some days it is still too hot to wear them at all even though it is winter! That is a very good idea to set a limit for yourself. There have been quite a few times when I've been at such places and actually go to draw out more cash to buy something extra. I shall definitely be giving your little rule a try!

  11. As always, you put together the cutest outfits and find the neatest things! Whenever I find myself in a vintage clothing store, for example, I try not to buy anything unless it has a really interesting design and/or fabric pattern, and is something that I haven't quite seen before in a shop.
